In Vietnamese culture life, a market place is a meeting place, not simply a trading place. This concept has always remained with Vietnamese culture. In childhood, there is not a child does not want his or her mother to take him or her to go to the market.
Why? If one lives in remote area and you have to world hard in the field or elsewhere to make a living. People have few opportunities to meet friends, relatives or neighbors so market is a great place for those needs. Without a market place, life can be quite boring.
With general consensus, communities chose to hold markets for more many reasons than for just shopping, for example people want to meet others, look for friends and partners of life.
They feel a need to belong to a community and also they may wish to share the dress sense with others and women show up their skillful talent. People often go to a great deal of effort to travel long distances over many hills and valleys even the cross the land border just come to the market. There is always a lot of excitement and joy associated with the market place environment.
Deltas, middle region and mountains have all their market. On the Central Highland Regions of Vietnam, there were practically no markets, the barter in the village was the rule until the middle of the 20th century.
Markets are provincial, of district and municipality or international. They take place every 5 days or sometimes on Saturdays or SUNDAY in the border high mountain of the North (for example:SAPA, BAC HA, COC LY, PHONG THO), even only one time per year like Khau Vai market in Ha Giang and Vieng Market in Nam Dinh. Fishermen’s villages have their own floating market.
